The Tribal Law and Policy Institute (TLPI), along with our training and technical assistance partners - the Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI), and National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA) present an upcoming webinar: Peacemaking in Tribal Communities: ROle of Tribal Law Enforcement. This webinar is designed to assist tribal court and justice system planners to better understand the following:

  • How tribal law enforcement officers have traditional served as peacekeepers in tribal communities
  • How tribal communities are reviving peacekeeping practices
  • Key inclusion and steps to planning peacekeeping practices
  • Examples of peacekeeping in tribal communities 

Who Should Attend:  

FY 2023 Coordinated Tribal Assistance (CTAS) Purpose Area #3 Grantees and anyone interested in learning more about tribal courts, indigenous models of restorative justice and peacemaking. 

Moderators:

 

BJ Jones serves as the Executive Director for the Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI). BJ has more than 25 years experience as a tribal judge for various Tribes in the Northern Plains area. BJ has served in tribal courts as well as courts of appeal throughout the region. BJ has been a long-time adjunct faculty member at UND School of Law and has taught courses such as Federal Indian Law, Criminal Law and Jurisdiction in Indian Country, and the Indian Child Welfare Act. BJ serves on the North Dakota Supreme Court's Tribal State Judges' Committee.

 

 

 

Brian Kauffman serves as the Executive Director for the Western Community Policing Institute (WCPI), a nationally recognized community policing and homeland security training institute. Brian has over twenty years in law enforcement and public safety serving in a variety of positions including patrol supervisor, tactical entry team member, police and corrections training expert and Lieutenant and Captain with the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).  Brian has trained thousands of public safety and community representatives across the nation in police and homeland security topics. Brian received a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Communication from Western Baptist College, and his Master's degree in Adult Education and PhD in Educaitonal Leadership from Oregon State University.
